Fire protection is an essential consideration to make for liquid storage containing flammable materials such as oil and other fuels. Having a Fire Protection Tank on your site will mitigate the risk of a storage tank with flammable liquid igniting.

Fireproof Oil Tanks offer excellent protection if there is a fire on your site and will give you time to both evacuate the building and extinguish the fire before it reaches the fuel.

These Heating Oil Tanks are all bunded and have been fitted with a unique, patented material which offers 30 minutes or 60 minutes of fire protection. 30-minute fire protection tanks are to be installed adjacent to buildings and boundaries and 60-minute fire protection tanks are installed inside an uninhabited building such as a garage.

Tanks are available to order as plastic or steel. Plastic Oil Tanks are bunded and manufactured from polyethylene and are expected to have a life expectancy of around 20 years. Steel Oil Tanks are also bunded and manufactured using high-grade steel with a high tensile strength and resistance to impact damage. Steel Tanks are a costly alternative to plastic although offer greater security and longevity with a life expectancy of around 30 years.

All of our tanks come with a 10-year guarantee when registered – we recommend regular maintenance of your tank to extend its usable life.

Installation

When installing the tank, a building inspector must certify the installation and ensure a site-specific risk assessment has been conducted.

A tank with 30-minute fire protection must be installed a minimum of 300mm from other buildings and 600mm where access is required.

A tank with 60-minute fire protection enables the installation of an oil tank within a garage / internal space where it is impractical to install externally to the building.  The tank must be installed at the lowest possible level in the building or structure and at a minimum of 300mm from internal walls and 600mm where access is required.

Oil Storage Requirements & Regulations

According to the Control of Pollution Regulations (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001 dictate the legal requirements for storing oil on a property in England:

  • Oil Tanks with a capacity of 3500& Litres must have a secondary containment (a bund).
  • Oil Tanks located in an area where spill risks polluting surface and groundwater must have a secondary containment (a bund).
  • Oil Tanks must be made of a material suitable for the oil type stored.
  • Ancillary equipment (no including fill pipe or draw-of pipe) must be within secondary containment system.
  • Automatic overfill prevention devices must be used when it's not practical to observe the vent pipe or tank.
