Changing Room, Lockers & Shelving

HERMEQ supplies changing room lockers for construction sites, warehouses, factories and offices, and for the schools and leisure facilities that run changing rooms of their own. Each locker gives a worker, pupil or visitor secure individual storage for clothing, boots, PPE and personal belongings.

The range covers steel, wire mesh, stainless steel mesh, aluminium and plastic lockers, and each material suits a different room. Mesh lets air reach damp work clothing and boots, while aluminium and plastic resist water in pools, showers and humid changing rooms. Benches, coat rails and shelves complete the room.

Changing room lockers in steel, mesh, aluminium and plastic

The choice starts with the room: how wet it gets, how dirty the clothing is that goes in, and how often users change, across a range that runs from single door lockers to units of twenty compartments.

Steel lockers

Steel lockers are the general choice for dry changing rooms, staff rooms and offices, where clothing goes in dry and each locker belongs to one member of staff. Solid doors keep the contents out of sight, which suits workplaces where personal belongings and work clothing share the same locker.

Wire mesh lockers

Wire mesh lockers, which the trade also calls cage lockers or mesh lockers, are the usual choice for construction site welfare and school changing rooms. Air passes through the mesh on every side, so boots, overalls and wet weather gear left overnight dry out between shifts. The contents can also be seen from outside, which makes routine checks quick.

Stainless steel mesh lockers

Stainless steel mesh lockers are made from 304 grade stainless wire for rooms that are washed down or where the air is damp or corrosive. Choose them over the standard mesh locker when the locker itself will be hosed down as part of the room's hygiene routine.

Multi compartment mesh lockers

Multi compartment mesh lockers put many small lockable compartments in the footprint of a single locker, for phones, wallets, keys and other personal effects. They suit large workforces and classes that change elsewhere but need somewhere secure for valuables, and the version without doors works as an open pigeonhole rack for issuing gloves, glasses and other small items.

Aluminium wet lockers

Aluminium wet lockers are built for swimming pools, spas, gyms, golf clubs and health centres, where swimwear, towels and the air itself carry moisture. Aluminium resists water and corrosion, so these are the lockers to specify for changing rooms that stay humid all day.

Ultrabox and Ultrabox Plus+ plastic lockers

Ultrabox plastic lockers are used in swimming centres, schools and workplaces, and they can stand outdoors under a shelter or canopy. Ultrabox Plus+ waterproof lockers are fully waterproof and weatherproof when fitted with the waterproof lock option, so they can stand in the open. Both lines also come as compact plastic mini box lockers and waterproof mini box lockers for smaller belongings.

Clean and dirty lockers

Clean and dirty lockers divide one locker into separate compartments, one for outdoor work clothing and PPE and one for personal clothing, so dirt, dust and contamination from the job stay away from the clothes staff travel home in. A single clean and dirty locker per person does the job that is often done by ordering two standard lockers each, with one locker to allocate and one footprint on the wall.

Laptop charging lockers

Laptop charging lockers from the Lapbox Charge and Store range charge laptops, tablets and phones while they are locked away, with 3-pin and USB charging options. Schools use them for class sets of devices, and offices use them for staff equipment that has to be ready at the start of the day.

Lockers for site welfare, pools, schools and workplaces

Construction site welfare

Welfare cabins need lockers that dry out wet gear and suit a workforce that changes as trades arrive and leave. Wire mesh lockers let boots and waterproofs air between shifts, and hasp and staple fittings let each operative lock up with their own padlock. Where operatives come off a muddy or contaminated job and change into their own clothes, clean and dirty lockers keep the two apart. Tools, plant and materials belong in secure site storage, which leaves the personal locker for clothing and belongings.

Swimming pools, spas and gyms

Water, humidity and a constant turnover of visitors set the brief in leisure changing rooms. Aluminium wet lockers and Ultrabox plastic lockers suit the wet side, poolside and shower areas, and open-air areas such as lidos can take Ultrabox Plus+ lockers. Most visitors use a locker once, so the lock has to work without issued keys, and benches between the rows give space to change.

Schools and colleges

School lockers take daily wear from pupils and need room for bags, PE kit and devices. Multi-tier steel and wire mesh lockers give each pupil a compartment without crowding a corridor, multi compartment units hold phones and valuables during lessons and exams, and charging lockers keep class sets of laptops and tablets charged overnight. Cloakroom benches and hook benches, which include infant sizes, fit out the changing rooms for PE.

Factories, warehouses and offices

The first question in a factory or warehouse is whether work clothing and PPE must be kept apart from personal clothing, and where it must, clean and dirty lockers answer it in one unit. Production areas that are washed down take stainless steel mesh lockers. Offices and staff rooms, where each locker is allocated to a named person for months or years, are usually fitted with steel lockers. Stock PPE, consumables and tools sit better in the wider site and workplace storage range.

Locker locks, doors and depths

Lock and key, padlock, combination or coin return

The right lock follows from how often a locker changes hands. Lock and key suits a locker assigned to one person for the long term. Hasp and staple takes the user's own padlock, so the lock leaves with the user and there are no keys to recover when a gang moves on to the next job. Combination locks remove keys and key management altogether, and coin or token return locks suit leisure visitors who need a locker for an hour or a day. The steel lockers and the Ultrabox plastic range carry all four options.

Doors, tiers and compartments

A single door gives a full length compartment for hanging coats, overalls and hi-vis, and more doors divide the same column so that more people share the same floor space. Lockers in the range go up to six doors, which suits bags, helmets and folded clothing, and mesh lockers come in nests that join side by side to fill a wall. Where staff only need somewhere for a phone, wallet and keys, a multi compartment unit holds a whole shift in one footprint.

Width and depth

Deeper lockers take bulky PPE, boots, hard hats and rucksacks, while shallower ones keep a corridor or a narrow welfare cabin clear. Wider compartments make full length hanging easier, and narrower lockers fit more users along a wall. Measure the space, allowing for the doors to swing open, and check the largest item each user brings before settling on a depth.

Stainless Steel Mesh Lockers
Changing Room Bench

Changing room benches, coat racks and shelves

Lockers, seating and hanging space are usually specified together, and the cloakroom range shares its light ash and black polymer finishes so that benches, rails and shelves match across one room.

Changing room benches

A bench gives users somewhere to sit and change, and the first choice is between a wall position and an island in the middle of the room. The ash timber and mild steel changing room benches come with or without a shoe shelf, and double sided changing room benches seat users on both sides of a central run. For schools and gyms, single sided cloakroom benches and double sided cloakroom benches carry timber or black polymer slats on steel frames. Timber benches are the simplest seat, and low seat benches give users more room to sit. Wall mounted cloakroom benches leave the floor clear for cleaning, and aluminium cloakroom benches are the premium option for leisure changing rooms. The steel and aluminium frames of the cloakroom range are powder coated in ACTIVECOAT, an anti-bacterial finish that reduces bacteria and germs on the surface by up to 99.9%.

Hook benches and overhead hanging benches

A hook bench puts a row of coat hooks above the seat, so users change sitting down and hang clothes within reach. Changing room benches with hooks and hook benches suit site and workplace changing rooms. Schools and gyms often choose single sided hook benches along a wall or double sided hook benches as an island, and aluminium hook benches suit premium leisure facilities. Overhead hanging benches add a rail with hangers above the seat for clothes that are hung at full length.

Coat rails, hook strips and coat hooks

Wall mounted hanging keeps clothing off the floor and walkways clear where there is no room for a bench. Wall mounted coat rails carry virtually unbreakable plastic hooks with rounded edges. Wall hook strips come in light ash timber or black polymer, and individual coat hooks fix to a strip or straight to a wall to add hanging points wherever they are needed.

Wall mounted shelf and rail

A wall mounted shelf and rail puts a shelf for bags and hats above a hanging rail, for rooms that lack the floor space for a bench. Anti-theft hangers stay attached to the rail, so every user finds a hanger and none leave the room.

Shoe baskets, base shelves and floor brackets

Under bench shoe baskets add a single or twin compartment beneath a bench for shoes, boots and kit, and base shelf slats add a lower shelf to single or double sided benches. Z floor brackets are steel brackets that bolt cloakroom furniture, such as the wall mounted bench and the shelf and rail, to the floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do changing room lockers need fixing to the wall?

Tall or narrow lockers are normally fixed to the wall, or bolted to the lockers beside them, so that a full locker cannot tip forward when its doors are opened or someone pulls on it. This matters most on uneven floors, in welfare cabins that are moved between jobs and in schools. Low units and lockers joined into a long bank are more stable, but the same practice applies wherever a locker stands on its own.

Do the lockers arrive assembled?

The stainless steel mesh lockers and the multi compartment mesh lockers need no assembly and are ready to position on arrival. The ash timber and steel changing room benches, including the versions with hooks, come with pre-drilled components and take around ten minutes to put together, with no measuring or marking out.

What happens if a locker key is lost?

Keeping a record of each locker, its key and who holds it makes a lost key a quick matter to deal with and stops spare keys going astray. Where keys go missing often, as on sites where gangs change from job to job, hasp and staple lockers let each user fit their own padlock. Combination locks remove keys from the locker room altogether.

Are the lockers made in the UK?

The wire mesh, stainless steel mesh and multi compartment mesh lockers are manufactured in the UK, as are the changing room benches, hook benches, coat rails, hook strips and shelf and rail units. HERMEQ processes steel and powder coats in house, which keeps the frames and finishes under its own control.

Can laptops and phones be charged inside a locker?

Devices should only be charged in lockers designed for it, such as the Lapbox Charge and Store lockers, which have 3-pin and USB charging built in. An ordinary locker with a charger or extension lead inside is not designed to carry power, and it should not be used to charge laptops, tablets or phones overnight.
