Drums & IBCs

HERMEQ supplies IBC containers and steel drums for storing and moving water and other liquids on construction and events sites. The open top steel drums are also used as ballast: filled on site, they hold temporary fencing steady on exposed or hard ground.

Both the reconditioned 1000 litre IBC and the reconditioned steel drum are manufactured in the UK. The IBC's metal frame and pallet base protect its plastic container from knocks and let a forklift or pallet truck move it, and the IBC is available for next day delivery.

IBC containers and steel drums

The range has two containers for different jobs: a palletised tank that holds and dispenses liquid in bulk, and an open top drum for ballast and for smaller, loose volumes.

Reconditioned 1000 litre IBC

An IBC holds a large volume of water or another liquid in a single unit that a forklift or pallet truck can pick up, and the liquid is drawn off through a valve at the base wherever the container is stood. The reconditioned 1000 litre IBC is the choice when a site needs a standing supply of water near the work, or one container for a liquid that would otherwise be spread across many smaller ones.

Reconditioned open top steel drum

A steel drum is smaller than an IBC, is handled one at a time and stands where a pallet-based unit will not fit. The reconditioned steel drum is supplied open, without a lid, so it is filled from a hose, by shovel or by hand and emptied by tipping. Choose it for ballast, for holding loose materials or site waste, and for smaller quantities of liquid that do not justify an IBC.

IBC water containers and drum ballast on site

On construction and events sites the range is put to three uses, and each one asks something different of where the container stands and how it is filled.

Site water at the work face

A filled IBC gives a working supply of water where there is no mains connection or where the nearest standpipe is a long walk from the job. Dust suppression on cutting and breaking, wheel and tool washing at the site exit, and mixing mortar, render or plaster all draw water little and often, so the container belongs on level, firm ground close to the task, with the valve facing away from plant routes and easy to reach. For a larger fixed supply, such as welfare units or a long programme of works, water storage tanks hold more and stay in one place.

Liquids and chemicals

The same IBC holds other liquids and chemicals delivered to site or decanted for use. What matters here is that the container suits the substance, that it carries a clear label for its contents, and that it stands on containment so a leak from the valve does not reach drains or open ground. Larger quantities that need a permanent installation belong in one of the tanks in the storage range, and the bunded storage described below takes IBCs and drums kept together.

Ballast for fencing and barriers

Filled steel drums hold down temporary fencing and barrier runs on construction sites and at events. The open top drum arrives empty and is filled where it stands with water, sand or spoil, so it is moved into position while it is still light and emptied the same way when the run is taken down. Drums are placed along temporary mesh fencing at corners, gates and exposed stretches, and on hard standing where stakes cannot be driven. Where a run needs a ready weight with no filling on site, concrete ballast blocks are the alternative.

Drum lifters, tilters and IBC lifting cages

The drum and IBC handling attachments work from the plant already on site, either the forks of a forklift or a crane, and the choice turns on whether the drum is to be carried upright, gripped without fitting straps, or tipped to pour.

Fork mounted drum lifters

A fork mounted drum lifter slides onto the tines and carries steel drums upright between the store, the delivery vehicle and the point of use, for sites and yards moving small to medium numbers of drums. The forklift drum lifter does the same job, and both come in single and double versions, so each lift moves one or two drums.

Rim grip drum lifters

The rim grip drum lifter is fully automatic: it grips the drum by its rim as it is lifted, with no straps or chains to fit by hand. It picks up open and closed top drums, which suits a yard or depot handling mixed drum stock through the day.

Forklift and crane drum tilters

A tilter holds the drum and turns it, so the contents are poured or decanted under control at the point of use. The forklift drum tilter mounts on the forks and moves and tilts drums where space is tight. The crane drum tilter hangs from a crane attachment on the forklift, with the tilt worked by a crank handle or a looped chain, and suits pouring into a hopper, mixer or container from above.

IBC lifting cage

HERMEQ manufactures the IBC lifting cage in the UK, with in-house steel processing. The IBC sits inside the cage, which has a lifting eye at each corner for slinging, so a container can go up by crane onto a scaffold, a roof or a part of the site that a forklift cannot reach.

IBC tipper unit

The IBC tipper unit is a steel stand that holds the IBC at an angle towards its outlet, so the last of the contents drains out of the base. It suits liquids drawn off over days or weeks, and it reduces waste when the container is nearly empty.

Steel drum storage and bunded IBC cabinets

Drums and IBCs kept on site or in the depot are stored according to how many there are and what they hold: a small covered unit for a few drums outdoors, or a bunded steel cabinet for a larger stock.

Covered drum storage

Covered drum storage is a hard covered HDPE unit for a small number of drums kept outside, with a rigid cover that keeps the weather off the drums and their contents. Choose it for the few drums a site keeps near the point of use for oils, cleaning liquids or other working stock.

Bunded IBC and drum storage cabinets

The bunded IBC and drum storage cabinet is a welded steel unit with a seam-welded containment sump below, sliding steel doors and lifting points on the roof, sized from 2 IBCs or 8 drums up to 24 IBCs or 96 drums. Choose it for a depot or long-running site holding several IBCs or a larger drum stock, and size it to the stock held at the busiest point of the programme with room left for incoming deliveries. It needs level hard standing and forklift access to the doors. Spill pallets and storage for other hazardous stock are in chemical and hazardous substance storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does IBC stand for?

IBC stands for intermediate bulk container, a reusable container sized between a drum and a fixed tank. The trade also calls them IBC tanks, totes or cubes, after the square shape of the container in its frame. The 1000 litre size is the one most sites use for water and liquids.

What is a reconditioned IBC?

A reconditioned IBC is a used container that has been cleaned and prepared for further service, so the frame, pallet and container stay in use. It costs less than a new unit and suits water and liquids used in the work. HERMEQ's reconditioned steel drums go through a similar process: they are cleaned and shot blasted inside and sprayed outside before supply.

Can water stored in an IBC be used for drinking?

The reconditioned IBC is supplied for water and other liquids used in the work, such as dust suppression, washing and mixing. Drinking water calls for a container made and certified for potable use.

What pallet size does an IBC fit?

The IBC's plastic base fits a standard pallet size, so it travels on the same vehicles and moves on the same forklift routes as other palletised goods. Lift it with the forks fully under the base and never by the top of the frame.

How many drums fit in the space of one IBC?

One IBC space takes four 205 litre drums. Each size of the bunded storage cabinet holds either a set number of IBCs or four times that number of drums.

Can drum lifters and tilters handle plastic drums?

The rim grip drum lifter, the forklift drum tilter and the crane drum tilter all handle plastic drums as well as steel ones. The fork mounted drum lifters are made for moving steel drums. Where plastic drums form part of the stock, choose a rim grip or a tilter.
