Flood barriers create a temporary line of defence where water needs to be redirected or restricted from entering an area. Depending on the selected system, individual sections can be joined to protect entrances, form straight runs or follow a planned route around buildings and work areas.
The HERMEQ range includes two distinct systems. FloodFence uses lightweight modular sections that deploy without ballast, while Floodstop barriers use incoming floodwater to fill and stabilise the units. Which Flood Barrier System Do I Need?
FloodFence Modular Barriers
FloodFence is a lightweight modular barrier made from ABS plastic. Each standard section is 450mm high and weighs 4kg, allowing individual units to be transported and positioned without filling them with water or adding separate ballast.Choose FloodFence where a compact, connectable system is required for lower barrier runs and straightforward handling. A dedicated FloodFence corner section is available for layouts that need to change direction.
Floodstop 0.5m Barriers
The 0.5m Floodstop is a self-filling modular barrier. Individual sections connect to form a flood defence line, while the matching 0.5m Multi-Hub can be used where the route needs to turn or meet a wall.This option may suit buyers who require a 0.5m-high system and need greater flexibility than a straight barrier run alone can provide.
Floodstop 0.9m Barriers
The 0.9m Floodstop follows the same self-filling principle in a taller format. It is intended for layouts where a greater barrier height is required than the 0.5m system can provide.Use the compatible 0.9m Multi-Hub when the taller barrier needs to form an angled layout, close a gap or terminate against a suitable boundary.
Flood Barrier Corners and Multi-Hubs
Corner sections and Multi-Hubs are system components rather than complete standalone flood barriers.The FloodFence corner is designed specifically for the 450mm FloodFence system. The 0.5m and 0.9m Multi-Hubs are each intended for the corresponding Floodstop height. Components from different systems or heights should not be treated as interchangeable.
How to Choose a Temporary Flood Barrier
Required Barrier Height
Compare the confirmed barrier heights against the requirements of the planned flood defence layout. HERMEQ currently lists FloodFence at 450mm high, alongside Floodstop systems in 0.5m and 0.9m formats.Do not select a system solely from general historic flood levels. Site gradients, water movement, drainage, ground conditions and possible routes around the barrier must also be assessed.
Layout and Total Run Length
Measure the full route that the barrier must cover, including entrances, corners, returns and wall connections. A straight measurement alone may not account for the additional components needed around buildings or irregular boundaries.
Surface Conditions
Temporary flood barriers need to be deployed on an appropriate surface and assembled in accordance with the product instructions. Uneven ground, loose debris, significant changes in level or gaps beneath a barrier may affect the completed layout.
Handling and Deployment
FloodFence sections are lightweight and do not require separate ballast. Floodstop sections are positioned empty and use incoming water to fill the barrier during use.The best option will depend on storage space, available personnel, access to the deployment area and the time available to assemble the full run.
Storage After Use
Reusable flood barriers should be cleaned, inspected and stored according to the manufacturers instructions after deployment. Before reuse, check the barrier sections, connectors and sealing areas for damage or contamination.
