These heavy duty ground protection mats are engineered to deliver long-lasting access support for construction vehicles, heavy plant, and workforce footfall across soft or unstable ground. Manufactured from 100% recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE), each mat is capable of supporting up to 50 tonnes depending on site conditions.
The mats feature a dual-purpose surface: a high-profile traction side for vehicles and a low-profile non-slip side for pedestrian use. This makes them suitable for both civil engineering projects and site routes with mixed traffic. With six integrated hand holes and multiple connection points, they’re quick to handle, align, and secure using standard mat connectors.
- Supports up to 50 tonnes - Ideal for plant, crane and HGV traffic over soft ground.
- Traction surface - Single or Double side, perfect for both vehicle and pedestrian.
- 100% HDPE recycled - Eco-conscious durability for temporary or repeat use.
- Minimises ground damage - Prevents ruts, bogging and turf destruction during site works.
- Easy to handle - Integrated hand holes enable fast set-up and relocation.
Commonly deployed in sectors such as utilities, events, infrastructure and construction, these mats enable secure temporary roadways, working pads and footpaths. The profile promotes grip in all conditions, and their wide format helps distribute weight evenly across unstable ground to reduce settlement and protect the sub-layer.
These mats may also be combined with our medium-duty ground protection mats for lighter traffic or pedestrian zones. For easy, interlocking installation, the Safe Site Floor Mat offers tongue-and-groove convenience, while for deeper excavation support or trench bridging, steel road plates are available.
HERMEQ stock a wide-range of Ground Mats, Bog Mats, Trench Covers & Road Plates conforming to all required safety specifications and regulations.

Heavy duty ground mats are among the most cost-effective and versatile ground protection systems for industrial and construction sites. Whether creating access over turf, mud, or gravel, these mats allow stable ground contact for people and machines while protecting the underlying surface from deformation or contamination.
- Material: 100% Recycled HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
- Weight Capacity: Up to 50 tonnes (subject to ground type)
- Handling: 6 integrated hand holes
- Connection: Multiple mounting points for steel links or flexible connectors
Unlike timber alternatives, HDPE mats resist rot, splintering and water absorption—suitable for multiple deployments with minimal wear. They also clean easily with a pressure washer and can be stored and stacked compactly between uses.
Ideal for crane pads, compound stabilisation, temporary haul roads, and walkways, these mats offer strong ROI through repeated use and rapid installation times. Accessories including steel links, hooks, and turners are also available upon request.
Can these ground mats handle articulated lorries?
Yes, they’re rated up to 50 tonnes and are suitable for heavy HGVs and plant traffic when ground conditions are assessed properly.
How are the mats installed and linked?
Mats are positioned manually using the built-in handles and linked using metal connectors or flexible links depending on surface layout and application.
Are these suitable for pedestrian zones?
Yes, they feature a low-profile textured side for pedestrian grip, ideal for walkways and shared vehicle access points.
Do they require special storage?
No. They stack flat on pallets or trailers and can be hosed clean and stored without risk of degradation or rot.
