The Scaffold Tube Tree Protection System is HERMEQ’s most robust option for protecting trees during construction, demolition and excavation projects. Designed in full accordance with BS5837, it is the preferred system where planning obligations or Tree Protection Orders require heavy-duty, impact-resistant fencing.

This fencing is built using high-yield scaffolding tubes in various configurations—vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and anchoring—combined with HERMEQ’s 3.5m wide x 2.0m tall anti-climb mesh panels. When fully braced, the frame forms a rigid exclusion perimeter capable of absorbing vehicular contact and preventing unauthorised site access to root protection zones.

  • Fully braced framework - Uses 21ft horizontal, 10ft vertical and diagonal tubes for a strong, interlocked frame.
  • Integrated mesh fencing - Panels fixed to scaffold tubing via couplers, pins, and heavy-duty cable ties.
  • Site-specific sizing - Optional 10ft tubes available for corner or angled layouts, quoted on request.
  • High compliance level - Required for many urban, public or heritage site builds involving large trees.
  • Instant cost calculator - Input total length needed for instant component breakdown and estimate.

When it comes to tree protection fencing in highly regulated environments, HERMEQ’s scaffold tube system is the trusted standard. Its structural resilience makes it ideal for large construction zones, civic developments, and locations where local planning conditions or environmental policies demand full BS5837 compliance. Contractors, consultants and planners alike rely on this mesh fencing system for long-term, high-integrity perimeter control.

The core of the system is built around HERMEQ’s anti-climb mesh fencing, reinforced by scaffolding tubes positioned vertically at maximum 3m intervals and driven securely into the ground. Horizontal and diagonal tubing is added to form a triangulated framework, fixed with pressed swivel and double couplers, creating a braced system that can withstand external pressure, impact, and weather stress.

This level of security and stability is essential when tree protection zones overlap with access roads, site traffic areas, or heavy machinery movements. The fencing keeps exclusion zones clearly marked and physically protected, limiting risk of root compaction, bark abrasion or chemical runoff. With optional components like corner tubes and anchor pins, it’s adaptable to complex site layouts and irregular perimeters.

Each component of the system, from ground pins to cable ties, is available through HERMEQ’s instant calculator tool—helping QS teams, site managers and procurement leads quickly scope the materials required. Combined with our on-site installation and buy-back support, this fencing system offers a complete service solution for professional, regulation-aligned perimeter management.

Tree Protection Fencing with Scaffold Tubes is engineered for maximum resilience on sites with high regulatory standards or frequent physical disruption. Built around steel tubing and anchored mesh fencing, it is suitable for any development where construction works pose a risk to the natural environment, specifically root systems, tree trunks and surrounding habitats.

The fencing uses HERMEQ’s round-top 3.5m x 2.0m mesh fencing panels paired with 21ft horizontal tubes, 10ft vertical and diagonal tubes, and 5ft anchor supports. These are connected using heavy-duty couplers and reinforced with pins to ensure immovable junctions. When required, extra 10ft tubes are used for angled corners or complex layouts and can be quoted based on site drawings.

This scaffold-based system is widely accepted as the default specification under BS5837 for tree protection on sites subject to planning applications. Vertical tube spacing is recommended at no more than 3m, and the full framework must be well-braced to resist lateral impact. Installation includes driving tubes into soft ground and coupling the mesh fencing directly to the upright frame, forming a visible, tamper-resistant boundary.

Typical applications include major infrastructure works, residential developments in conservation zones, heritage restorations, and city-centre excavations where tree preservation orders apply. It prevents tree damage from equipment collisions, soil compaction, and accidental intrusion, while also serving as a clear visual and legal perimeter during work phases.

As with all HERMEQ perimeter systems, the scaffold fencing option is backed by our support services including full site installation, buy-back of materials after project completion, and waste clearance. We help ensure site operators stay compliant while minimising material waste and associated costs. Cable ties, couplers, mesh clips and ground pins are all integrated into the standard HERMEQ component list—ensuring every section is reinforced and reliable.

Is scaffold fencing required for BS5837 compliance?
Yes. In many local authorities, scaffold-based protection is the standard for tree protection under BS5837.

How far apart should the vertical tubes be placed?
Maximum spacing should be 3 metres, driven into the ground and fully braced with horizontal and diagonal supports.

Can I use this fencing for public-facing sites?
Yes. It is ideal for public works, roadside projects, and city-centre sites where tree damage risks are high.

Do you offer help with installation?
Absolutely. HERMEQ provides nationwide installation, as well as site clearance and buy-back of all used materials.
